Personnel involved in drilling / workover operation who are preparing to attend a well control school for the first time. This course must be taken prior to attending the IWCF Drilling Well Control course as per new IWCF regulations. Candidates that choose to attend the IWCF Drilling Well Control following this Introduction to Well Control may be eligible for a discount.

The Introduction to Well Control is also suitable for personnel who are unfamiliar with drilling and workover operations and would like a basic introduction to well control.

Course Overview The Introduction to Well Control course provides potential well control certificate candidates with an awareness of well control theory, practices and equipment using a combination of drilling simulator and classroom theory/exercises.

Candidates sit an IWCF Introduction to Well Control examination at the end of the course and must pass with a mark over 70% to achieve a certificate and progress to IWCF Drilling Well Control.

 

Course Content – Introduction to the drilling rig and its equipment (hoisting, rotating, circulating and Blow Out Prevention (BOP) systems)
– Controlling the well
– Kicks – what is a kick, what causes a kick?
– Fluids and pressures
– How to complete a trip sheet
– The trip tank system
– Basic tripping calculations
– Shut-in methods (drilling and tripping)

HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS

Students are responsible for making their own hotel reservations.

Suites are provided for POTS students at a special rate per night plus tax (single) . You may also contact us to get help in reservations online. Reservations must be made at least two weeks prior to the class start date.

IWCF CANDIDATE NOTES

  • The IWCF requires IWCF testing centers to order the IWCF tests ten days prior to the exam date. Therefore, POTS requires all course participants to enroll at least ten days prior to the last day of the class. Participants must indicate at the time of enrollment the following information: Type of Certification (Surface or Combined Surface/Subsea), Units of Measurement (English, Metric), and Language for written test.
  • All candidates must bring their Passport and present to Assessor and Invigilator before tests are administered. (U.S. citizens who do not have a passport may present their driver’s license.)
  • IWCF candidates should complete the IWCF practice exercises included in the “Survival Pack” (sent to students with their confirmation letter) prior to coming to the course to maximize preparedness for the test. Bring your questions.
